Village Voice

The Village Voice was founded in 1955 by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher and Norman Mailer. It is possibly one of the best known arts-oriented tabloids in the category of alternative weeklies. Interestingly enough, its 1980s advertising slogan was “some people swear by us…other people swear AT us.” The Village Voice is a free weekly newspaper based in New York City and is also delivered throughout the United States on the basis of pay. This newspaper includes current affairs, culture, investigative articles, event listings and arts reviews. The Village Voice began from an apartment in Greenwich Village on October 26, 1955. The headquarters in the 1960s could be found in Sheridan Square but are now located in Cooper Square. A huge part of the paper has been to investigate the political system in NYC. It has also made film, dance, music and arts reviews a priority in informing the public. It has been granted numerous awards including three Pulitzer Prize awards and various Obie awards. Up until 1995, there was a music poll ran by Robert Christgau called “Pazz and Jop”, which received very good reviews. Soon after this section ran, a film poll was created by film critic J. Hoberman.

The Village Voice has had many well-known contributors to have written an article in the newspaper. Some of these incredible talents include Ezra Pound, E.E. Cummings, Katherine Anne Porter, Tom Stoppard, Ron Rosenbaum, Paul Levinson and Barbara Garson. Some of the Village Voice columnists have included Michael Musto, Joy Press, Dan Savage, Tricia Romano and Alexander Cockburn. There have also been many cartoonists to have been lucky enough to have their work grace the pages such as Jules Feiffer, Ward Sutton, Lynda Barry and Matt Groening. Some of the newspapers largest opponents include the New York Observer, the New York Press and Time Out New York. The NYC Village Voice used to be sold on newsstands, but is now free to anyone who wants it in the five boroughs of New York. The Voice also has a website which has received honors like the Online Journalism Award and the EPPY Award for Best Overall US Weekly Newspaper Online. The paper’s parent company, Village Voice Media, also owns a whopping seventeen other alternative weeklies throughout the country. In 2005, the Village Voice was bought out by New Times Media and has not had a great following since then. Many of its publishers and columnists have been fired and there has been a high turnover rate. Many critics claim there has been a loss of the original community spirit.
