The Juilliard School

The Juilliard School in NYC is one of the world’s top schools for the performing arts in the fields of dance, drama, and music. Located at the Lincoln Center, about 800 undergraduate and graduate students study there.

The NYC Juilliard School was founded in 1905 because too many American students were leaving for Europe to study the performing arts. Juilliard Graduate School and the Institute of Musical Art were merged in the 1920s to form what is now The Juilliard School. In 1951 the dance division was added. There is also a pre-college division, evening division, and MAP program. There are joint degree programs offered with Barnard and Columbia College at Columbia University.

When you visit the Lincoln Center and the Juilliard School in New York, you never know what future superstar you are seeing. Juilliard has produced some very notable alumni, including Christopher Reeve, Robin Williams, Kelsey Grammer, and Kevin Spacey.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is a large complex of buildings you can visit. It serves as the home of 12 arts organizations, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Film Society f Lincoln Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Lincoln Center Theater, Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, New York Philharmonic, and the School of American Ballet among others.

There are a number of famous performance facilities at the Juilliard Center, which you can visit with your New York discount car rental. Alice Tully Hall is located within the Juilliard School for the performances of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Avery Fisher Hall is where the New York Philharmonic play their concerts. New York State Theater is where you will find ballet performances as well as some performances of the New York City Opera.

Just down the road from the Lincoln Center is the new Time Warner Building. One interesting fact that you may learn when you visit is that this property has the highest listed market value in the city ($1.1 billion in 2006). There are a number of offices, residential condominiums, shops, and even the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. At the base of the building, there is an upscale shopping mall, while the basement contains a large Whole Foods Market.
