The Curse of 1940

You hear a lot about 'curses' in sports, but one of the most famous involves the New York Rangers. After winning the 1940 Stanley Cup, it was 54 years before the Rangers were champions again. There are two explanations for the curse. First, after the 1940-41 season, the Rangers had paid off their mortgage on Madison Square Gardens. Management decided to burn their copy of the mortgage in the bowl of the Stanley Cup. It is rumored that this desecration of the sacred Cup is what started the curse. The second explanation came from Mervyn Dutton, coach of the New York Americans. The Americans and Rangers had a heated rivalry in the 1930's, which ended by the Americans being forced to fold during WWII. Dutton blamed the Rangers and declared that as long as he lived, the Rangers would not win the Cup. Dutton died in 1987 only 7 years before the Blueshirts broke 'the curse'.

What a 'Mess'

Watch out for 'Moose' crossing. Playing for the Rangers from 1991-1997 and again from 2000-2004, Mark Messier, affectionately nicknamed the Moose was one of the games all-time greatest players. In 1994, the two-time league MVP led the Blueshirts to their first Stanley Cup in 54 years. A game away from elimination, team Captain Mark Messier guaranteed a win in game 6 and led his team to victory with 3 goals. In game 7, Messier again lit the lamp scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal before raising the Cup for all of New York. Retiring in 2004, Messier finished his career with 1887 points, second only to former Ranger teammate, Wayne Gretzky. Messier left behind a legacy and became an immediate New York sports hero.
