New York Forward
The New York Forward is a Jewish-American newspaper that was founded in 1897 and printed in the Yiddish language. Today it is also publishes English editions, so make sure to swing by a newsstand in your NYC mid size car rental or van rental and pick up your own copy! The New York Forward was first published by Abraham Cahan and it brings news and others issues to the attention of New Yorkers every day.
Each edition of this Jewish-American newspaper has its own contents and own discussions and solely aims to serve the people of New York. The Yiddish version has lately been getting a lot of attention because its language has been growing more popular among university students. Circulation for the Yiddish version is at about 3,000 but continues to look toward a promising future. Boris Sandler, a very prominent Yiddish writer, is the editor of the Yiddish version of the New York Forward. You might also be interested to know that there was a Russian edition for a few years as well.
In its early days, the New York Forward backed trade unionism and supported socialism. It was also a huge advocate for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. One of the paper’s most significant moments was when the most famous Yiddish edition writer, Isaac Bashevis Singer, won the Nobel Peace Prize. He was not the only well-known writer to do work for the Forward, though. When the New York Forward first began, it rose above the crowd and became the voice of the Jewish immigrant. It battled to promote social justice and helped to integrate immigrants into the way of American life. Today, the New York Forward is the pride and joy of journalist and author, J.J. Goldberg. Goldberg took over in July 2000 and because of him, the paper received its biggest English-language circulation ever. The Forward is getting back to its roots as a helpful tool to guide the Jewish experience in America.
