The New York Ballet
The New York City Ballet, sometimes called City Ballet or NYCB, was founded in 1933 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein and musical director Leon Barzin. You can come see them perform with your New York City car rental or van rental at the New York State Theater.
Before going to see the New York City Ballet you will want to learn about the ballet you are about to see. The more you know, the more you will enjoy the performance. You can read the Repertory Notes online to see what you can expect, hear some of the music, and learn about the piece and the dancers. When you walk into the NYCB theater, you will see a majestic space. The entrance and ascending staircase leads the audience to the performance level. Along the walls, you will find historic photographs of performances past.
When you come to the ballet, you do not need to come in your finest attire. Most people come dressed in “office casual” wear. Suit jackets and ties are not required for men. Even jeans are acceptable these days. During the holiday season, many people do come to the New York City Ballet dressed up because there is an opportunity to take pictures with one of the characters from The Nutcracker.
Audience members are allowed into the theater 30 minutes before the show begins. If you need to pick up your tickets before the show, please arrive at least 15 minutes to give yourself time. Also, as you are planning what time you want to leave in your cheap SUV rental or mid size car rental, it is wise to check to make sure there are no other sporting events going on, as traffic can be a nightmare during these times. You may need to plan for extra time. Parking is limited near the Lincoln Center, but there is a Garage here. The cost to park here is $30 Sunday through Wednesday and $31 Thursday through Saturday. You can leave your New York discount car rental here over night if you have other plans until 10 a.m. the next morning.
