A dive into the unknown

The story of the New York Aquarium began in 1896 when it opened its doors for the first time. This makes it the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States! The original location was in lower Manhattan, which is now Battery Park. At the time that it opened, there were only 150 specimens of wildlife. In 1941 this location was temporarily relocated to the Bronx Zoo while a bridge was to be constructed. In 1957, the current location was opened in Coney Island. There was a lot more space here to have many more species and exhibits.
