Gramercy Park

Gramercy Park is a small, fenced-in park in Manhattan. It is only one of two remaining private parks in NYC, with almost no access to the public. It is located between East 20th Street and East 21st Street between Park Avenue South and Third Avenue. Lexington Avenue terminates at the park.

Gramercy Park is very exclusive, so you may not be able to visit it when you drive by in your New York car rental, van rental or SUV rental from Prestige Car Rental. Owners in the surrounding structures can buy a key to the park, which is changed annually. Members of the Players Club and National Arts Club as well as guests of the Gramercy Park Hotel have access. It's funny to think that this private park in NYC was originally a swamp. Samuel B. Ruggles bought the farmland from James Duane in 1831. In 1966, the park was designated a historical district. Ruggles donated the property to the city in 1831 on the condition that no commercial enterprise be permitted on the facing streets or in the park. There are no swing sets, snack shops, or other amusements in the park to this day. When you peer in from the windows of your Manhattan cargo van rental, you will see one of the oldest private parks in NYC and even the United States.

Central Park is a large public, urban park in the center of Manhattan that has been seen in many films, making it one of the most famous parks in the world. There are artificial lakes, walking paths, ice skating rinks, and a wildlife sanctuary.

In the 1820s as New York City began to grow quickly, people in the city wanted more green space to escape to the city. In 1844, there was a lot of pushing for a park such as Paris’ Bois de Boulogne or London’s Hyde Park, which was like an escape for those who lived there. In 1853, the people of New York finally got their wish: the New York legislature made 700 acres of the city available for the park, which would cost more than $5 million in land alone!

There are many things to do in the park once you leave your New York discount car rental. In the summer there are free open-air theater productions put on my Public Theater, often starring well-known stage and screen actors. Most of these plays are Shakespearian, but not all of them. They New York Philharmonic also gives a concert every summer on the Great Lawn, an event that is worth the trip! The Metropolitan Opera also does two performances.

New York has a number of green spaces for you to explore. While Gramercy Park is closed to the public and somewhat exclusive, there are other places in the city to explore. The most well-known park in the United States, Central Park, has many activities for you to enjoy while you visit.
